Mixed Dal Tadka

INGREDIENTS:

  • Moong dal/green gram dal – 1/3 cup
  • Urad dal/black dal – 1/3 cup
  • Thoor dal/pigeon peas split – 1/3 cup
  • Onions 2 chopped
  • Tomatoes 1 diced
  • Whole spices( pepper corns, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom)
  • Grated ginger 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsps
  • Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Garlic chopped – 5-6
  • Salt to taste

FOR TADKA/TEMPERING:

  • Ghee + Oil – 1+1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves 10-12
  • Green chilies finley sliced – 2
  • Cumin 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilies 4-5
  • Garlic finely sliced 5-6
  • Coriander chopped – 2 tbsp
  • Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp

Wash and soak moong, urad and thoor dals and soak them in warm water for 30mins. In a pressure cooker add 1 tbsp oil, add cumin as it turns dark add the whole spices followed by chopped onions and garlic, saute for 5 mins. Add chopped tomatoes and grated ginger, saute for 5-7mins on medium flame. Next add spices, turmeric, chili powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Add soaked dals with enough water and cook till 4 whistles on medium flame. Open the cooker add few curry leaves and sliced green chilies, salt to taste and water to adjust consistency and let it boil for 5 mins. Transfer into a serving bowl and add the tadka onto the dal.
