Jivati Restro, Hyderabad’s first-of-its-kind certified organic restaurant is celebrating its first anniversary with a two-day Chappan Bhog pop from Jan 26-27.
The buffet priced at Rs999 features Odia-Bengali staples of the more exotic kind – like the tiger prawn malai curry, organically sourced from Sundarbans; crabs netted from Chilika lake, free range mutton slow cooked in an earthen pot, fish roe cutlets, tilapia in a mustard gravy and more.
My favourites from the non-veg selection were the prawn malai curry and fish roe cutlets.
There’s an extensive variety of vegetarian options too – like the Ghanto Tarkari (mixed vegetables) thats served with fluffed hot maida pooris, aloo posto (potatoes cooked with poppy seeds), Kanika (fragrant saffron rice), roasted moong dhal, and an assortment of fritters.
The pineapple (Sapuri Khatta) and tomato with dates (Khajuri tomato Khatta) are as authentic and tasty as they can get. Trust me, I’ve grown up on these, made by my grandma, one of the best cooks in my book.
There’s quite a variety in desserts too. Again, my favourite among the lot was the paneer jalebi, more for the nostalgia of this being one of my mom’s signature dishes. The texture was a bit rubbery, but thats what happens with these sort of delicate dishes are constantly on a food warmer. Never really appreciated channa poda, but from what the others had to say, thats good too.
The best way to figure out whats worthy of seconds is to head there yourself. Today’s the last day of the pop-up so you still have 2 more meals to go (both lunch and dinner) to check it out.
