Prawns in Gravy



  • Onion 1
  • Prawns ½ kg
  • Cumin seeds 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds 1 tablespoon
  • Fenugreek seeds ½ tablespoon
  • Fenugreek powder 1 pinch
  • Peppercorns 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder ½ teaspoon
  • Chilli powder (optional) 1 teaspoon
Tamarind 1 small lime size ball
  • Garlic 6 + 2 flakes
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Oil 2 tablespoons
  • Salt to taste

Shell the prawns and de-vein. Wash well and keep aside. Roast cumin, mustard, methi and pepper, and grind together with turmeric powder, tamarind, onion and garlic to a fine paste.

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil and add 2 crushed garlic pods to it. When it turns brown add few mustard seeds. When it crackles add the ground masala. Keep frying, adding little water at a time, till the oil separates from the masala. Then add salt to taste and the washed prawns. Cook till just one boil. Sprinkle methi powder and serve hot.
