Spice Junxion at Taj Deccan just keeps getting better with every innovative food fest from conceptualisation to execution. A delicious case in point is its ongoing Festival of Appealing Appams.
This Kerala staple gets a flavourful upgrade from a simple rice coconut base to unique permutations like beetroot, egg, spinach ghee, carrot, whole wheat, red millet and oats appams.
Traditionally paired with stew, Spice Junxion is serving them in a plated set of 2 appams along with a different curry complementing every type of appam and a generous bowl of fresh coconut milk.
Like the Nei Appam, a traditional ghee appam that’s paired with an absolutely sinful bhuna gosht, or the orient-inspired Keerai Appam, spinach flavoured appam with Asian spiced prawns.
With so many options its difficult to pick a favourite, but for me it was a tie between the Nei Appam, served with bhuna gosht and the Palappam served with meen moilee (fish curry).
The Mutta Appam, steamed egg appam served with spicy grounded meet is the only exception in the menu where you’re served just one appam in the set. But it’s filling enough with the ande ka funda.
I preferred the non-vegetarian options, although there was an interesting mix for vegetarians as well. But then that’s because I’m biased. Between a Mangalorean chicken curry and a baingan bharta or a bhuna gosht and mushroom gassi, I’d choose the meaty options any day, also because they seem to taste better with appams.
The non-vegetarian appam sets are priced at Rs500 and the vegetarian at Rs450 exclusive of taxes, and are available for both lunch and dinner. But the fest is only till June 26th. So ready, steady po po po!
